The Portales Fire Department has received approval from the city council to submit a loan for a new fire apparatus, a piece of equipment they have been needing for years, according to officials.
The cost of the fire truck with the 100 foot aerial platform is a little over $850,000.
"It's been a priority to replace this for the last six years due to age and mechanical issues," said Portales Fire Department Chief Gary Nuchols.
He said at least three previous fire chiefs have attempted to replace the truck, but were denied grant money from the state government.
"Over the past three years, we've been fortunate to roll over money in our fire protection fund with the state and compile a little over $300,000 for a down payment," Nuchols said.
Department officials say they plan to get the exact same model because it has more capabilities than any other apparatus has in its class. The current truck is at the end of its service life.
"Not replacing it will jeopardize the safety of their personnel as well as properties and the people we protect," Nuchols said.
The New Mexico Finance Authority requires the department to obtain city government approval via resolution to submit the loan application.
City Council approved the resolution at their recent meeting.
Councilor Leo Lovett said the city went to Santa Fe for years trying to get funding for this fire truck.
"I really appreciate Chief Nuchols being able to use his own resources to purchase the fire truck that is definitely needed to protect structures in Portales," Lovett said.
Nuchols said he should be able to submit the application this fall and receive the truck by November of 2013.
"Our city manager and leaders understand the importance of this type of application to protect the citizens of Portales and for the overall safety of fire personnel," Nuchols said.
