Stabbing suspect says victim 'ran into the knife,' according to arrest warrant

Thursday's fatal stabbing was the result of an argument between two friends who stopped in Clovis during a road trip, according to court records.

Chip Fox

According to court records:

  • Murder suspect Chip Fox, 35, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., told an officer that his friend Kevin Reardon, 35, of Valencia, Calif., "freaked out" after huffing Dust-Off dust cleaner and ran into the knife Fox held.
  • The stabbing occurred about 10:30 p.m. Thursday at 300 Dawn Loop.
  • Reardon, who died about six hours later at a Lubbock hospital, told an officer he was verbally abusing Fox and Fox stabbed him in the stomach. Reardon refused to give the name of his friend and said he couldn't "rat" on his friend. Reardon eventually admitted that Fox was the friend who stabbed him with a slight nod.
  • During another interview with Fox officers learned that Reardon directed obscenities toward Fox but did not threaten Fox nor did Reardon have a weapon.
  • Fox said Reardon did not physically assault him, he did not fear for his life but was afraid that Reardon would hurt a neighbor.
  • Fox told police the two had never fought during the two to three years they were friends.
  • Fox's girlfriend, Tiffany Pryor, told police she was inside the home and did not see what happened. Pryor told police that she had seen Reardon huffing Dust-Off two to three times during their trip.
  • Pryor told police that she, Fox and Reardon had come to Clovis after visiting South Dakota and Austin, Texas, on a vacation and job hunting trip. They were staying at the home of Fox's aunt while in Clovis. Pryor said they planned to return to San Luis Obispo, Calif., the following day.
  • Police retrieved the knife thought to be used in the stabbing at a neighbor's residence.
  • Reardon died at 5 a.m. Friday after being transported to a trauma hospital in a Lubbock.
  • Fox is being held at the Curry County jail on an open court of murder. His bond is $1 million cash-only.
  • Thursday's stabbing was the city's third homicide this year.
