My turn: Advice for incoming freshmen

Covering another Eastern New Mexico University event has yet again, given me a nostalgic experience.

As I shadowed two incoming freshmen move into their dorm, I flashbacked to when I flew from San Francisco to Houston with eight suitcases, completely uprooting my life to a new beginning.

I thought of the ridiculous amount of shoes I brought with me and meeting my Hollywood roommate for the first time.

I also saw a student cry right before me, not wanting to let go of her parents and how I fearlessly let go of my mother's hand.

Those first two years of college were carefree. In reality, I want to grow through life but if I could label favorite years to relive, those college years would be it.

That freedom evolves into adulthood, eventually, and I wanted so much more. In life, you're always going to be aiming for a "there" and then when you get there, you should want to go further.

I honestly hope I'll never reach a place of complacency, not to be confused with happiness, because my happiness is defined as always striving to do better.

So as freshmen across the nation start the first week of college this week, cherish every moment, because you can only aim for better.
