Roswell High scored early and late, and the Coyotes were able to keep the Wildcats off the board en route to a 2-0 victory.
The Cats thought they had the game tied shortly before halftime when Darian Whiting scored, but he was called for a handball.
"We matched up really well with them," CHS cioach Greg Trujillo said. "They just caught us a little sluggish. We just could never make our chances count.
We moved the ball really well. We just couldn't make anything happen."
Juan Vargas put Roswell High in front in the fifth minute. The score stayed that way until Luis Garcia took a through ball and beat an outside defender, slipping a shot past CHS goalkeeper Jesus Madrid in the 70th minute.
Madrid, who played the second half, had five saves in goal while starter James Smart had two. Brandon Rodriguez earned the shutout in net for the Coyotes, with three saves.
The Coyotes also took the junior varsity game 3-1, with Luke Bussen scoring for Clovis.
Saturday, the Cats open their home schedule with a 3 p.m. matchup against Alamogordo at Yucca Complex.
