Texico Lady Wolverines
District 4-2A
Texico's Kimber Harrison, left, and Taylor Stevens set up a wall against Portales hitter Audri Underhill during a Saturday afternoon scrimmage at Rock Staubus Gym. The six-time defending Class 2A state champion Lady Wolverines open the 2012 regular season tonight at Melrose.
Coach: Kristen Scanlan (5th year)
2011 record: 22-2 (beat Bosque 3-0 for sixth consecutive Class 2A championship)
Returning lettermen: 3
Returning starters: Shaylee Anderson, Sr. OH; Mel Lucero, Sr., lib.
Of note: The Lady Wolverines should contend for another Class 2A title, but are trying to replace four starters, including standout twins Jaylyn and Jordyn Cooper at outside hitter. Scanlan is looking for her six-strong senior class to provide leadership.
Coach's take: "We've got girls working hard to replace those positions. If you set the ball to Ja or Jo, 95 percent of the time it's going down. This year's team is hard-working and scrappy. They're kind of role players, honestly, and they're going to have to play their roles for us to be successful."

"We're not very tall, but we're pretty athletic," he said.
Coach's take: "I'm pleased with what we have so far. It seems like a team that'll work real well together."

Of note: King coached the Lady Coyotes from 2008-10, then served as an assistant to Mike Milner last season. Milner, who is in private business, helps out as a volunteer assistant as much as time allows. … Everybody's chasing Tatum, the three-time defending Class 1A state champion. "They've lot a little bit off last year's team, but they're still good," King said.
Coach's take: "I feally think we have a lot of good players coming back. We have a couple of young players in key spots, but once they figure it out we'll be all right."

Of note: The Lady Tigers return 10 of their 13 varsity players from last year's squad. … Chenault expects a tough opener tonight at home against Fort Sumner. … In addition to winning the first two Class B titles, Elida had a strong run under Chenault before that in Class 1A. The Lady Tigers lost to Animas in the 2006 final, and reached the 1A semis two other times — including in 2006 when they suffered their only loss of the season to then-district rival and eventual champion Fort Sumner after having beaten the Vixens three times during the season.
