WICHITA, Kan. — Senior defender Michael Stewart scored less than five minutes into the second half Friday night and the Eastern New Mexico University men's soccer held on for a 2-1 victory over Newman in the season opener for both teams.
Stewart scored off an assist from junior midfielder Jehmaine Brooks, and the Greyhounds made the lead stand up behind a stout defense which permitted the Jets three shots on goal in the match.
Newman got the first goal of the match on a penalty kick by Nathan Modesto in the 15th minute, and held the lead until senior forward Diego Santos tied it for the Hounds with an unassisted tally about 10 minutes before halftime.
ENMU is back in action on Sunday, traveling to Adams State for a 1 p.m. matchup.
