Zias fall at ACU

ABILENE, Texas — Abilene Christian struck for a pair of goals late in the first half Friday and the Wildcats held off Eastern New Mexico University 2-1 in Lone Star Conference women's soccer.

The win was the first in conference play for ACU (3-4, 1-2 LSC). The Wildcats broke a scoreless tie when Andrea Carpenter broke in on ENMU goalkeeper Xan Ortiz and scored from close range in the 35th minute.

About 5 1/2 minutes later, Julie Coppedge made it 2-0 when she converted on a penalty kick.

The Zias (2-6, 1-3) got on the board with less than nine minutes remaining when senior midfielder Danielle Thurman spoiled Arielle Moncure's shutout bid by knocking in her second goal of the season, assisted by Danielle Caro.

Moncure finished with three saves, while Ortiz had four for the Zias.

ENMU plays another LSC road contest on Sunday in a noon (MDT) start against Midwestern State at Wichita Falls, Texas.
