Offense still best defense

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE — The 27th Special Operations Wing Sexual Assault Response Coordinator office hosted a free self-defense class in the Fitness Center at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Oct. 20.

The SARC, along with the Military Family Life Consultant and Airman & Family Readiness Center provided information with regard to domestic violence awareness and prevention to more than a dozen military members and dependents who participated in the class.

Three Jeet Kun Do-trained martial artists provided fundamentals and education to the men, women and couples in several groups tailored to the needs of each individual.

"We are focusing on four fighting styles - kicking, punching, grappling and trapping," said Roselie Freixas, JKD martial artist. "These fighting styles are principle driven and focus on self-defense. We really want to help students feel empowered in this versatile art."

"The four ranges we demonstrate today will differ by drive and the individual's preferred fighting style," Freixas added. "By the end of our instruction, we will have shown students how to use their opponent's strengths against them and avoid tiring out during an actual fight."

A second class will be offered in the Fitness Center, Oct. 27. For more information about the class, contact the SARC at 575-784-1044
