Creative Living: Quick, easy recipes featured on show

Information on preparing quick and easy recipes and designing and fitting strapless gowns will be the featured topics on "Creative Living" 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and noon on Thursday. (All times are Mountain.)

Connie Moyers is the Extension Home Economist with the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Service, and her annual festive program draws hundreds each year. She's going to demonstrate three quick and easy recipes from her show, and these could be side dishes or party foods. She lives in Clovis.

Designing and fitting strapless gowns will be demonstrated by Connie Crawford who is the President, CEO and designer for Fashion Patterns by Coni. She'll start by showing different styles of strapless gowns and then explain how the draping process is done for a perfect fit every time. She's from Hansville, Wash.

Information on cooking with sweet potatoes, refinishing bookcases, and making hats for cancer survivors will be the featured topics on "Creative Living" noon on Tuesday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. (All times are Mountain.)

Sue Langdon is with the North Carolina Sweet Potato Comm. in Smithfield, NC., and she's going to demonstrate the versatility of using sweet potatoes in a segment she calls "Soup to Salsa."

Bruce Johnson is a professional furniture refinisher, author and syndicated columnist, and he's going to demonstrate a variety of finishing techniques for unfinished bookcases. He represents Minwax, which is located in Upper Saddle River, N.J.

Seamstress and designer, Evelyn Langston has designed a line of "survivor hats" for cancer patients, and she'll not only show how to make these hats, but will point out specific features needed for cancer survivors. Her company is Ozark Crafts, and she's from Gilbert, Ark.

Brownie trifle

  • 1 pkg. (19 1/2 ozs.) fudge brownie mix
  • 1/4 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 2 pkgs. (3.9 ozs. ea.) chocolate fudge instant pudding, prepared according to package instructions
  • 1 container (12 ozs.) frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 8 (1.4 ozs. ea.) chocolate-covered toffee candy bars, coarsely crushed

Ground nutmeg

Prepare brownie mix according to package directions in a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan. Prick top of warm brownies at 1-inch intervals with a wooden pick; brush with coffee liqueur, if desired. Cool and crumble. Prepare pudding mix according to package directions, omitting chilling. Layer half of the crumbled brownies in a 3-quart trifle bowl or dish, top with half of pudding, half of coarsely crushed candy bars, and half of whipped topping. Repeat with remaining brownies, pudding and topping. Cover and chill 8 hours or overnight. Garnish with nutmeg and remaining crushed candy bars. This can also be prepared and served in stemmed glasses for individual servings.
