Zias capture two individual wins at SPC

LEVELLAND, Texas — Freshman Clarissa Salazar and sophomore Breanna Pendleton captured field event wins for the Eastern New Mexico University women's track team on Saturday in the South Plains College Indoor Invitational meet.

Salazar threw 36 feet, 3 inches in shot put to edge South Plains' Jasmine King by a half-inch. The Zias took the next three spots with freshman Adrienne Trujillo third at 33-10 3/4, Pendleton fourth at 33-7 1/6 and freshman Laura Grube fifth at 31-3 3/5.

Pendleton took first in the weight throw at 41-7 1/4. Grube (39-1 1/4), Salazar (35-11) and Trujillo (33-6 1/2) finished second, third and fourth.

Meantime, sophomore Kris-Ann Walters set school records in triple jump (36-4 1/4) and long jump (18-6 5/6). On the track, freshman Amber Saiz ran third in the 800 in 2 minutes, 24.75 seconds, and came in second in the 1,000-meter run in 3:11.70.

On the men's side, sophomore Dathan McWhorter of Texico set a personal best at 43-6 5/6 effort in shot put, while freshman Jaleel Jackson went 45-6 1/4 in triple jump, earning second place.

On the track for the Greyhounds, freshman Ricky Milks and junior Jacob Espinoza were sixth and seventh in both the 60-meter dash and the 200. Junior Zerrick Viriseno was third in the men's 5,000 in 16:09.58, while sophomore Joseph Metcalf placed fourth in 16:11.22 and sophomore Justin Samaniego was fifth at 16.17.83.

ENMU will compete in the Lone Star Conference indoor championships on Saturday at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
