Curry County Cats post second win

After having a 78-yard punt return nullified by penalty in the opening period Saturday night, Clovis High grad Phillip Williams responded with third-quarter touchdown runs of 1 and 17 yards to help the Curry County Cats beat the West Texas Outlaws 21-6 in the Professional American Football League opener for both teams at Leon Williams Stadium.

The Lubbock-based Outlaws scored on a 16-yard pass play in the first quarter, but the Cats' Chris Lewis blocked the PAT kick. Williams' TDs gave Curry County a 14-6 lead through three periods.

J.J. Gross caught a 27-yard TD pass from John Props in the final stanza to complete the scoring. Rico Urquizo kicked all three PATs for the Cats, now 2-0 overall.

"We came out flat this week," Cats coach Paul Lopez said. "We fumbled the ball three times and had two interceptions in the first half. I think we were inside the 10-yard line about three times."

Brandon Jones and Quinn Culliver had pass interceptions for the Cats, who take on the Wichita Falls Nighthawks in their third consecutive 6 p.m. Saturday home game next week.
