As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end.
Sophomore right-hander Nick Hammett threw seven shutout innings and Metro State salvaged the finale of its four-game series against Eastern New Mexico University by beating the Greyhounds 7-1 on Sunday at Greyhound Field.
Hammett (1-1) used 123 pitches in allowing four hits, with three walks and two strikeouts. The Roadrunners (4-5) almost had a shutout, but senior right-hander Carlos Luzon surrendered junior second baseman Colton Sims' team-leading fourth homer of the season with two out in the bottom of the ninth for the Hounds (11-2), who had their seven-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in nine home games.
Today's scheduled 2 p.m. game against University of the Southwest has been postponed because of Sunday's snowstorm. A makeup date will be announced at a later time.
Eight players hit safely for Metro, including two hits each for designated hitter Jacob Nelson, first baseman Darryl Baca, left fielder Alex Schrupp and right fielder Reilly Mau. Nelson and Baca each had a pair of doubles.
The Roadrunners scored in the top of the first for the fourth game in a row. They carried their 1-0 lead into the fifth inning before taking advantage of two errors by ENMU shortstop Luis Quinones to score a pair of unearned runs with two out off starter Brett Humphries (2-1), coming on an RBI double by Baca and a run-scoring single by Schrupp.
The Roadrunners chased Humphries in the sixth, getting RBI singles from Mau and Mitch Gibbons. They added two in the eighth on Baca's RBI double and a run-scoring single by Zac Baldini.
Quinones had three of ENMU's six hits. The Hounds are still batting .401 as a team and averaging nearly nine runs a game.
The teams combined to leave 26 runners on base — 14 by Metro and 12 by ENMU.
