• Last time out: The Wildcats beat Ruidoso 59-47 at home on Thursday to advance to the finals. Portales' last outing was at home on Feb. 22, a 65-64 win over Ruidoso.
• Season series: Portales 2-1. Lovington won at home 56-55 in the district opener on Feb. 12, but PHS came back with an 83-68 win at the RAC a week later to force a seeding playoff, which the Rams also won 57-48 on Tuesday night at Roswell High.
• Of note: Portales played one of its best games in its regular-season win over Lovington. In Tuesday's matchup, junior F Daniel Sanchez scored 19 points and senior F Reyes Calbert added 16 for the Rams, who broke away from a halftime tie. Junior F Nathan Chavez added a trio of 3-pointers off the bench. … Junior F Andrew Homer and junior G Quantel Nash scored 13 points each for Lovington on Tuesday, while sophomore P Stephen Lennox had 12. … PHS, which has played a competitive schedule in its own right, is ranked sixth in Class 3A while the Wildcats, despite their record, are No. 8 after playing seven Class 4A, two Class 5A and seven Texas opponents.
GIRLS
Lovington (18-8) at Portales (19-6)
• When: 5:30 p.m. today at the RAC
• Radio: KSEL-FM 105.9
• Last time out: Lovington advanced to the district tournament final with a 50-25 rout of Ruidoso at home on Thursday. The Lady Rams beat Ruidoso 51-27 at home on Feb. 22.
• Season series: Portales 2-0. The Lady Rams won in Lovington 31-27 on Feb. 12 before edging the Lady Wildcats 38-33 in overtime at the RAC in the rematch.
• Of note: PHS went 8-for-10 from the free throw line in OT last week in outscoring Lovington 8-3. Prior to that, the Lady Rams were 6-of-16. … PHS is ranked fourth in Class 3A coming in, while the Lady Wildcats are No. 5.
• Prices: PHS athletic director Mark Gallegos said ticket prices tonight are $4 for adults and $3 for students and seniors.
