Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
With all the daily tasks women have to do to keep their lives and their families together, it may be hard to find the time to enjoy what they want to do, but Portales Woman's Club members say on April 6, that will change.
Portales Woman's Club members will be holding their ninth annual Women's Seminar at Eastern New Mexico University's Greyhound Arena, a seminar that will feature more than 21 workshops and 40 vendors for the empowerment and enjoyment of women.
Gaynelle Thomas, one of the event organizers, said this revamp to their traditional "Women's Day Out" should attract the women who can't get a day to themselves because there are a variety of workshops that can appeal to the interests of all kinds.
"It's one of our major fundraisers for the year," Thomas said. "We feel like it's giving back to the community."
Local TV and radio personality Pamela Atherton was selected to deliver this year's keynote speech on living your dreams.
Event Chair Sheryl Borden says the event has been given a much-needed facelift because this year will feature new presenters and workshops.
Some highlighted favorites include gardening, skin care, cake decorating, interior design, weight loss and plastic surgery.
"Curt James, he's always been a popular class," said Thomas about a local gardener who wowed women last year with gardening in pot techniques.
Thomas added that because they will be in ENMU's gym, exercise classes will also take place.
Women will be able to attend up to three classes that spark their interests within the four-hour seminar.
"It's just a day that a woman can get out and refresh herself," Thomas said. "I like it because you see women enjoying themselves doing especially what they're interested in. It's a good thing for the Women's Club to provide this for the community."
Thomas added that $1 of every ticket sold will go to the American Heart Association. She said the rest of the funds are pumped back into the community through local scholarships and other needs of the people in Portales.
