Clovis teams sweep Portales in tennis

Clovis High's tennis teams had the better of it Tuesday against Portales at the Bill Wahlman tennis courts — including supertiebreakers.

The Clovis boys won two such decisions and posted a 6-3 win over the Rams, while the Lady Wildcats earned three supertiebreaker wins and posted a 9-0 shutout against the PHS girls.

"We had a great day today," CHS coach Siobahn Liles said. "Hopefully, we can keep it up."

The CHS boys won supertiebreakers at No. 1 singles (Kousie Richeson over Mychael Sturm) and No. 5 doubles (R.J. Alvarado and Luis Calderon over Anthony Necker and Bailey Thompson-Garcia.

Sturm and Lucero posted a 7-5, 6-3 win, but the Wildcats won the dual 6-3.

"We just battled ourselves as well as Clovis," Rams coach Brian Kirchner said. "We're still struggling with the mental (part of the game)."

Clovis won tiebreakers on the girls side at No. 4 singles (Mariah McPherson over Ryann Privett), at No. 2 doubles (Brittany Pope and Gracie Schneiderman over Belle Youngerwolf and Privett) and No. 3 doubles (Bianka Valdez and Alexis Lucero over Ely Chavez and Mireya Lopez).

PHS girls coach Ann-Marie Bucksath saw some good things.

"The girls got some good competition, and we found some things to work on," she said.
