Rams clobber Santa Fe Indian twice

SANTA FE — After losing their opener to Clovis 14-1 two weeks ago, the Portales High baseball team was definitely on the other end of the spectrum on Tuesday night.

PHS pounded out 37 hits in a 24-1, 17-2 sweep of Santa Fe Indian, with both games shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.

Junior Daniel Sanchez went 4-for-6 with three doubles and junior Sam Roberts was 4-for-4 with a three-run triple in the opener for the Rams.

Portales finished that abbreviated game with 24 hits.

"Everyone that played had at least one hit in that game," Rams coach Arturo Ontiveros said.

River Fine went the first three innings on the mound, and Jarrett Faust pitched the last two.

In the second game, senior Zach Blaeser went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs while sophomore Omar Legardo was 3-for 4 with a t riple and three RBIs. Grant Wagner pitched three innings, and Sanchez and Blaeser worked one inning apiece.

"They were very young," Ontiveros said of the Braves. "Their coach told me they had lost a couple of kids to grades."

PHS will host a weekend tournament. The Rams are slated to play Hope Christian at 3:30 p.mm. on Friday, then face East Mountain at 5:30 p.m. and Texico at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
