Late-inning rally boosts Lady Cats

ROSWELL — Freshman Mariah Chavez hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh inning Friday night to boot Clovis High's softball team to a 3-1 win over Roswell Goddard.

Senior Andrea Ramos pitched a complete-game three-hitter for the Lady Wildcats (2-7), striking out six and walking two.

Clovis (2-7) banged out 10 hits off Goddard pitcher Danielle Hubbard.

"We actually played a complete game today," CHS coach Brandi Thomas said. "We played good defense and we stung the bats, and (Ramos) did a really good job (in the circle)."

Neither team scored until the fifth, when A.J. Wright's sacrifice fly gave Clovis a 1-0 lead. The Lady Rockets (2-3) immediately answered in the bottom half to tie t he game.

In the seventh, Lyndsi LeClear reached base on a bunt single and Wright was on as the result of a fielder's choice before Chavez sent her deciding hit to right field.

Clovis backed up Ramos' solid pitching with a defense which committed just one error in the contest.

"All the way around, everybody contributed," Thomas said. "It was a good win for us. If we can keep improving and build off this, we're going to be OK."

The Lady Cats return to action a week from today, facing Cibola at 11 a.m. and Sandia at 1 p.m. in Albuquerque.
