RUIDOSO — Clovis High's girls were just consistent enough to get a win in Friday's Great 8 tournament at The Links of Sierra Blanca Golf Course. The CHS boys, meantime, came close.
The Lady Wildcats posted a team score of 375 to edge host Ruidoso by one shot in the five-team girls field. The boys, meantime, shot 329, good enough for second out of six teams behind Roswell Goddard (324).
Junior Victoria Fox shot a 90 to lead the Lady Cats and finish second overall behind Goddard's Emily Englehard, who finished at 79. Senior Haley Berry (92) also was in the top five, and all five Clovis players finished in the 90s.
"I was real pleased," CHS girls coach Steve Speck said. ""It was a real tough course, and easy to get into trouble.
"So far each week, a different girl gets our best score."
Boys coach Cal Fullerton noted the team cut 21 strokes from its last outing on March 18 in the Rio Rancho Invite.
"I told the guys, 'If we just saved two or three strokes apiece, we'd have been close to getting a (team) leg for state," he said.
Junior Emilio Romero shot 37-41 — 78 for the Wildcats, good for second place overall and his first leg toward state. Senior Matt Justus finished in a three-way tie for third at 80.
Clovis squads return to action on Monday in the Artesia Invitational.
