Defense dominates at Green-Silver tilt

BLACKWATER DRAW — You can practice the option, the home-run throw up the middle or the quick-out to the sideline all spring. But strap on all the gear, and it usually comes down to turnovers.

ENMU sophomore wide receiver Adrian Horton is taken down by defensive back Willie Riley in the second quarter of the Green and Silver scrimmage Saturday morning at Greyhound Stadium.

The Green-Silver Game, which ended Eastern New Mexico University's spring season, was no exception. Silver capitalized on its two chances while the Green stalled inside the red zone on its two chances, and that was the difference in a 14-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Stadium.

"Defense, overall, really did an awesome job; you can tell by the scoreboard," said defensive lineman Wade Bounds, whose fumble recovery set up Silver's insurance touchdown in the third quarter. "We got our assignments down to a T, and really played fast and confident."

Greyhound senior wide receiver Arvin Jackson hauls in a pass over defensive back Willie Grant in the second quarter of the Green and Silver spring game Saturday morning at Greyhound Stadium.

As you'd expect in a situation where the Greyhounds' defense spent all spring seeing the team's offense, it was the defense that was ahead of the curve as a full game netted a combined 471 yards of offense.

"Once the plays started, you'd see the defense move to spots we were going," said quarterback Jacob Jameson, who rushed 10 times for 28 yards, including a 1-yard keeper that put Silver up by the final margin. "You've got to be perfect when they know what you're doing."

The Silver squad wasn't perfect, but made the most of its chances, whether long field or short field. Bounds' recovery gave Jameson a 30-yard field.

"Small field, we're confident we'll score because our run game is so good," Jameson said.

After Willie Grant snuffed out a Green drive with a jump-ball interception at the 2, Silver quarterback Ryan Greene took advantage with the long field. His third-down bomb landed at midfield in the hands of Jacob Johnson, who went untouched for the 97-yard score.

ENMU coach Josh Lynn said the quarterback play from Jameson and Greene makes it a difficult choice for who will replace the departed Wes Wood behind center.

"If we had to start the season right now, I still don't know which guy we're starting," Lynn said. "With that said, a decision has to be made."

Jeremy Buurma handled most of the quarterbacking duties for the Green squad, completing 12-of-18 passes for 136 yards — with his favorite targets being Arvin Jackson (four catches for 62 yards) and Adrian Horton (three for 35).

Anthony Torres hit a 34-yard field goal late in the first half to get Green on the board.

The Greyhounds open the 2013 season in a 7 p.m. game on Sept. 7 against New Mexico Highlands at Blackwater Draw.
