Portales softball squad secures sweep

Senior Summer Martinez pitched a complete game and hit a three-run homer to help Portales High beat Las Vegas Robertson 9-2 on Saturday in the Lady Rams' weekend tournament at Wheeler Park.

Portales (7-3) went 3-0 in the event, winning twice on Friday.

Martinez gave up seven hits to the Lady Cardinals (9-7), but kept them scattered. She finished with three walks and three strikeouts.

PHS banged out 13 hits and did all its scoring in two innings — four in the third to wipe out a 1-0 deficit, and five more in t he fourth.

"We left some runners on, but we're doing a little better job of getting hits when we need them," PHS coach Robbie Crowley said. "We still have work to do, but we're getting better."

Junior catcher Simone Laurenz went 3-for-4 with a double while four others, including Martinez, added two hits apiece. Destynea Martinez had RBI singles for Portales in each of their scoring innings.

Amber Yara and Heather Aragon each had two hits for Robertson, which got an RBI double from Elena Garcia in the second and a run-scoring single from Michelle Aragon in the sixth.

PHS returns to action on Monday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Loving at Wheeler Park.
