ENMU TRACK, RODEO: Zias set three school marks

LUBBOCK — The Eastern New Mexico University women's track team set three school records in Saturday's Texas Tech Open track meet.

Junior Brittany Buchanan placed first in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 40 minutes, 56.71 seconds, winning the race by nearly 50 seconds. It was the fifth-fastest time in the Lone Star Conference this season.

In the 800, sophomore Alesha Jones ran a time of 2:15.52, good for fifth place, and broke the previous school mark of 2:18.3 by sophomore Sabrina Huelga. Freshman Amber Saiz was sixth in the race at 2:16.08.

In triple jump, sophomore Kris-Ann Walters also broke the school mark, placing ninth in 37 feet, 5 inches — five of the eight athletes ahead of her were Division I. Walters added a seventh-place finish in long jump at 18-2 1/4.

Huelga was seventh in the 1,500 in 4:490.51, while freshman Laura Grube was fifth in javelin at 127-2 and seventh in discus at 135-9.

For the ENMU men, junior Kevin Road placed fourth in the 5,000 with a time of 15:26.88, while sophomore Justin Samaniego led a 2-3-5 showing in the 10,000 in 33:15.36. Junior Joseph Metcalf followed in 33:54.97, and junior Zerrick Vriseno ran 34:24.67.

In field events, junior Tanaka Pfupajena was fifth in javelin with a throw of 170-5, the fifth-best toss in the LSC this spring.

Rodeo — At Snyder, Texas, sophomore Zoey Sharp took first place in breakaway roping and the ENMU women finished sixth with 145 points in the Western Texas College rodeo. ENMU's men were 11th with 50 points.

Sharp had an average of 4.5 seconds on two, after splitting first and second in the short go with a time of 2.1 seconds. Zias junior TiAda Gray was fifth in the event.

Senior Jessie Kirkes split second and third in the first go of goat tying.

For the men, senior Christian Pettigrew placed fifth in steer wrestling after splitting first and second in the short go.

ENMU returns to action this weekend in the Howard College rodeo.
