Vacation was over. There was one more thing to do. We were in search of the best chicken pot pie ever.
And it was sold in the deli of a supermarket somewhere in L.A. (Lower Alabama).
The Lady of the House and I had discovered it on our last trip when we stopped at a supermarket for some road food.
We sat in our car on that cool fall day and dug into our eats.
"Mmmm," I said. "This is the best chicken pot pie I've EVER had."
The chicken had a freshly roasted flavor to it, the gravy was smooth and tasty, the vegetables weren't overcooked and it was all wrapped up in a flaky puff pastry crust.
"You just like the puff pastry crust," said The Lady of the House.
"And the gravy and the chicken," I said.
So going home we stopped at the first grocery store across the Alabama state line. It was filled with a wonderful barbecue aroma but no chicken pot pie. We stopped at another supermarket that had lots of tasty looking pastries but no chicken pot pie.
On the road again I fell asleep in the back seat. West of Mobile,
Ala., I woke up just in time to see, like the shining golden city of El Dorado, a Winn-Dixie supermarket in Semmes, Ala.
"THAT'S IT!" I proclaimed. "THAT'S the supermarket, pull in!"
I dashed out of the car through the store and back to the deli where there was one lone chicken pot pie.
I stood in front of the deli, spread out my arms and yelled, "This is the home of the best chicken pot pie in the world!"
The people behind the counter looked like they might call the cops. The two little old ladies waiting for fried chicken seemed scared.
"All this for a little puff pastry," said The Lady of the House.
