Lady Rams improve, but still finish last

SOCORRO — If senior Paige Hartman had been able to make a few more putts, she likely would've finished in the top six and earned a medal in Class 1A-3A girls state golf .

As it was, Hartman shaved eight strokes off her score from the first day, shooting 79 on Tuesday at the New Mexico Tech golf course, good for a 36-hole total of 166 and seventh place at the New Mexico Tech golf course.

"Paige played beautifully from tee to green, actually both days," PHS coach Loy Hampton said. "She played well enough to shoot 73 or 74 either day; she just couldn't putt it."

Meantime, freshman Bailey Rowley went from a 102 on Monday to an 84 on Tuesday as the Lady Rams shot 397 — 18 strokes better than Monday — but still finished last in the six-team field at 816.

Rowley's problems came before she got to the green, Hampton said.

"That's not who she is," Hampton said of Rowley's opening round. "She didn't really hit it all that well, but she putted well."

Host Socorro cruised to team honors at 670, 90 strokes ahead of runnerup Bosque.

Kristen Cline took individual honors and led three Socorro players in the top six with a score of 75-73 — 148, 4-over-par for the tournament. Her teammate, Shania Berger, was seven shots back in second place.

Hope Christian, with three medalists, shot 311-305 — 616 for a 10-stroke victory over Socorro on the boys side. The Huskies' Sean Carlon took individual honors at 74-72 — 146, two shots over par.
