A convicted killer stole 40 seconds of freedom after being sentenced to life in prison Friday when he escaped while being escorted from district court in Muleshoe.
Daniel A. Cardon Jr., 50, who was convicted earlier in the day by a Bailey County jury of gunning down his estranged wife, broke free from police and ran about a block before being apprehended, according to Bailey County Sheriff Richard Wills.
Wills said Cardon was transported for detention at the Lubbock County Sheriff's office due to security concerns.
Cadron was sentenced to life in prison without parole after a four-day trial, according to court documents.
Police say Cardon shot Lucila Perez, 38, point-blank in the head about 12:30 a.m. June 4 in the 300 block of West Third Street in Muleshoe, across the street from Mary DeShazo Elementary School.
Perez had five children, two with Cardon.
Police captured Cardon the day after the shooting in a field east of Muleshoe.
