It’s almost fair season, which means county residents will have the opportunity to display their hard work to the whole community. In this year’s flower show at the Roosevelt County Fair, hosted by the Portales Women’s Club, judge Rosalie Richards will have the tough task of deciding who will win first place. Richards owns Hestand’s Floral and this will be her second time judging the flower show.

What first piqued your interest in flowers?
I’ve always loved flowers ... as a child growing up in Illinois, I would pick wood violets and lily of the valley bouquets and deliver them to the elderly in my village on May Day.
How long have you owned Hestand’s?
It will be six years this November.
What are your favorite flowers?
It’s really hard to pick just one, but lilies, violets, and lily of the valley are my top picks.
What do you look for when judging?
Uniformity, strength of stem, the bloom, how difficult a particular flower might be to grow ... over all appeal of the flower or plant.
Describe your previous experiences judging the fair flower show.
This will be my second time ... my first time, I wanted to give everyone a prize! It takes a lot of tender loving care to grow a lot of flowers and plants in Portales.
Do you have a secret talent?
Well ... floral designing was pretty much a secret until I bought Hestand’s. My dad was a florist before I was born, and I thought the gene had skipped a generation. My daughter is a talented designer.
Tell us about any memorable county fair experience you have had in your life?
Double ferris wheel ... scared me to death ... when it stopped at the top, I tried to crawl out. I might have been 6 years old. Took me a long time to get brave enough to try a standard ferris wheel!
