Hounds expecting 130-140 prospects for first practices

Second-year Eastern New Mexico University football coach Josh Lynn isn’t sure how many candidates will be on hand for the start of practice, but it’ll be a large number.

Lynn said Monday the Greyhounds expect “between 130 and 140” prospects when preseason practice commences today. The returning players are scheduled to go from 8:30-10:30 a.m., while newcomers will work out from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

“We’re still waiting on a couple of guys,” Lynn said, noting they were finishing up summer school. “They’ll all be here in the next couple of days.”

The Hounds went 3-7 last season, including 2-6 in the Lone Star Conference. With the departure to the Southland Conference of Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word, the LSC now has seven teams in football.

ENMU, whose 11-game schedule includes five non-league outings, was picked sixth in the preseason poll.

“There are seven teams in our league now, and I think all seven are good,” said Lynn, whose squad opens with a 7 p.m. tilt against New Mexico Highlands on Sept. 7 at Blackwater Draw. “Sixth (in the poll) is about where I expected to be, but I think we’ll be better than last year.”

The Hounds have 10 a.m. intrasquad scrimmages on tap this Saturday and on Aug. 31, and a 7 p.m. midweek scrimmage on Aug. 21. All will be at Blackwater Draw.
