City manager: Police chief to resign

Portales Chief of Police Doug Jones is resigning after less than year at his position, according to Portales City Manager Doug Redmond.

Redmond said Jones, who has been with the department since November, was not asked to resign.

Redmond, in his second month as city manager, said he requested a meeting with Jones on Wednesday afternoon to discuss issues within the department and issues with Jones. He said Jones resigned during the meeting. Redmond said he expects an official letter Thursday.

When reached by phone, Jones declined to comment on the matter.

Redmond declined to say why Jones is resigning. The city manager said Jones did not indicate the last day he would be on the job.

Jones has been with the department since November, inheriting a department plagued with internal problems.

When hired, Jones had almost 27 years law enforcement experience as a special agent with the FBI and as a director of training with the U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department, according to his resume.

He was living in Florida.
