Elida second-grader Kyleigh Stephenson loves her art class with her teacher Robin Gregory.
One of her projects she did in the art class was influenced by artist Henri Matisse. She cut out several designs from pink, purple and blue construction paper and glued it on to another square of construction paper.
“I really like art because I get to create something new,” Stephenson said.
Stephenson’s abstract art project is being displayed at the fifth annual K through Eastern New Mexico University Community Youth Art Exhibition along with more than 20 other projects.
Students in kindergarten through senior year of college within 200 miles of the college were eligible to entered at the art gallery.
Other towns represented include Portales, Muleshoe and Dora.
Gregory picked six works of art from her students from her twice-a-week art class. Mikaela Cooper, Riley Truex, Jaylee Bradley, Ashley Mitchell, and Emmit Falcon were the other students whose art is being displayed at the gallery.
“I pick art that I thought would look great displayed and some of the students came up to me with art they wanted displayed,” Gregory said.
This is the first year Elida students have had their art displayed at this gallery.
Other art mediums included water color, oil pastel, pen and ink, marker and acrylic paint.
“I am really excited that my art is displayed at the gallery,” Stephenson said.
