Jamboree set to sound off

A 64-year tradition in Floyd will be “a good old country good time,” said the master of ceremonies, Dave Nash, of the Floyd Lions Club Jamboree.

This year’s Floyd Jamboree features more than 25 acts with a wide variety of traditional country/western music performances and some cowboy poetry.

The music choice is from the jamboree’s start in 1950 as there will be no contemporary country music played.

“The talent is really good this year and it always has been. It is local talent and not just folks from Floyd, but I say people from a 50-mile radius are performing next weekend,” Nash said.

The jamboree features performances for three days. Included is a gospel show 2 p.m. Sunday, according to director Fred Patterson. Thursday is Military Appreciation Day. All military, retired or active, get in for half price if they show a military ID.

On the Friday before performances begin, there is a sale of Navajo tacos by the Floyd High School senior class. Saturday is the last day of the jamboree and the Lions Club is presenting their Citizen of the Year award.

Nash said money brought in by the jamboree goes right back into the community.

“The Lions Club helps buy eyeglasses for those who cannot afford it. We also help people who need help paying for doctor visits and other medical costs throughout the year. We also buy uniforms for Floyd’s sports teams and we have three college scholarships we give out every year,” Nash said.

Nash said the jamboree is always draws large crowds and is a time for many people see friends they have not seen in years.

“People come a long way away to come to the show and there is a lot of visiting during the intermission of each show,” Nash said.
