Club notes — April 20

The Altrusa Club of Portales

The Altrusa Club of Portales met Monday in the Zia Room at the Central Annex. President Linda Leaming called the meeting to order.

The opening ceremonies were conducted by Sheryl Borden. Minutes were approved. There were 21 members and two guests.

Beverly Bennett drew for the Queen of Hearts.

The club voted to pursue having a golf tournament on Oct. 11 at the Portales Country Club. Lori Ribble will chair the committee.

Members enjoyed special refreshments celebrating the club’s 65th birthday.

Secret pals were revealed.

Bette Martinez and Cathy Rankin gave a final report and recommendations for the Char-I-Tea, which donated hundreds of books to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, as well as $600 in cash. Since the event has grown, it will be held in the gym at the New Mexico Baptist Children’s home next year.

The meeting adjourned at 1 p.m.

Portales Woman’s Club

Portales Woman’s Club met April 9 with President Julie Nickles presiding.

Nickles led the pledges, and Gaynelle Thomas led the Collect. Geralyn Million gave the invocation. There were 13 members and four guests present.

The previous meeting minutes were approved. The treasurer’s report was filed. Cami Howl, membership chairman, initiated new members: Danielle Swopes and Lori Dunn.

Beth Banda introduced Lorissa Marshall, the reigning Mrs. Portales, who will be competing at the state level.

Plans for the upcoming circus fundraiser were discussed, 50/50 drawing for District III, and estimates on a new heating and air conditioning unit for the club building.

The slate of officers were elected for 2014-2015.

Amber Hamilton, chair of the Hostess Committee, introduced Mary Mendoza, who assisted with the food and decorations.

Sheryl Borden introduced Karen Alexander who talked about poetry and shared her work. Banda presented her with a certif

icate of appreciation.
