Fishing report — July 17

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Fishing was good using Power Bait, marshmallows and Pistol Petes tipped with worms. Anglers also did well trolling a worm behind a cow bell attractor. We had no reports on perch.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 43 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using elk hair caddis, worms, salmon eggs and spinners. Anglers also reported excellent success using golden stone fly nymphs in the deeper holes. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and elk hair caddis.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair using yellow Power Bait for rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair using topwater lures, senkos, tubes, jerk baits and worms for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using spinner-minnow combinations, worm harness rigs and leeches for walleye. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using stink bait and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was good using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was very good using salmon eggs, worms, bead-head nymphs and elk hair caddis.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was fair trolling Arnies, Platte River specials, Z Rays and Panther Martins tipped with corn at 15 to 25 feet for kokanee and rainbow trout. Anglers fishing from anchored boats also caught several trout. They were using Power Bait. Fishing was very good using worms for perch. Fishing for northern pike was slow.

Gallinas River: Trout fishing was very good using night crawlers and salmon eggs.

Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was very good using Pistol Petes, worms, salmon eggs and Power Bait. This past Saturday, Balam Hena along with his father, uncles and cousins caught 22 rainbow trout. They were using olive Pistol Petes and rainbow Power Bait down deep and described their experience as a great day for everyone.

Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, homemade dough bait, Power Bait, Pistol Petes, Panther Martins, Super Dupers, elk hair caddis and copper John Barrs for trout. Anglers using lures and flies are reporting the best action near the dam.

Los Pinos: Fishing was good using bead-head hares ears, night crawlers, Panther Martins, worms and San Juan worms for a mixed bag of browns and rainbows.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, salmon eggs, Gulp eggs, Power Bait and worms for trout.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, Panther Martins, Power Bait and worms. The boat ramp remains closed due to low water conditions.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 61 cfs. Trout fishing was good using bead-head hares ears, bead-head prince nymphs, ants, elk hair caddis and night crawlers.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 80 cfs and the water was clearing. Trout fishing near the hatchery was rated as good to excellent by anglers using elk hair caddis, ants, caddis larvae, bead-head hares ears and pheasant tail nymphs. Anglers also did well using worms and salmon eggs. Fishing at the hatchery pond was excellent using Power Bait, salmon eggs and small flies.

Rio Costilla: Water flow below the dam as of Monday morning was 53 cfs. Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, yellow sallies and bead-head pheasant tails.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 446 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using bead-head hares ears, BWOs, large attractor patterns and night crawlers for trout. Fishing from Albuquerque through the Socorro area was fair to good using night crawlers, liver and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 29 cfs. Fishing was very good using elk hair caddis, bead-head hares ears, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 11 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 18 cfs. Donnie Valdez hit this one again this past week and had great luck using bead-head hares ears, bead-head pheasant tails and his own Sweet Bee pattern. Other anglers reported great success using hares ears, prince nymphs and stimulators.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using red and white Daredevles and Rat L Traps for northern pike up to 28 inches. Fishing was fair using cut bait and chicken liver for catfish.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was good using night crawlers and Power Bait for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using night crawlers for catfish.

Ute Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, chigger craws and worms in 8 to 10 feet of water for smallmouth bass and an occasional largemouth bass. A few were also taken by anglers fishing topwater lures in the early morning hours. Fishing was fair to good using live minnows and leeches jigged in 15 to 22 feet of water for walleye. Fishing was excellent using worms, minnows and small jigs for bluegill. White bass fishing was fair during the day but very good at night for anglers using minnows under lights at 30 to 35 feet. Night fishing for catfish was fair using liver and stink baits. Fishing for crappie was slow. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair to good using tubes, grubs and worm harness rigs for walleye. Fishing was fair using topwater lures, crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, wooly buggers and chatter baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using topwater lures, jerk baits and tubes for smallmouth bass. A few catfish were caught by anglers using chicken liver, dough bait and night crawlers. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 755 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair to good using hot dogs, jerk baits, crank baits and topwater lures for tiger musky. Fishing for catfish was slow with just a few caught by anglers using water dogs and hot dogs at night. Fishing for trout was slow. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: Fishing was good using Power Bait, worms, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 300 cfs and 380 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using Rapalas, Panther Martins, night crawlers, salmon eggs and wooly buggers for a mix of brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. Below Abiquiu fishing was fair using night crawlers for rainbow trout.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using jerk baits, topwater lures, chigger craws and chatter baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits and jerk baits for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, dough bait and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using worms and small grubs for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, copper John Barrs, Power Bait and salmon eggs. Anglers having the best luck are fishing from boats in the evening hours.

Heron Lake: There was very little fishing pressure over the weekend and fishing was slow for all species.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 19 cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez and the Cebolla was fair using elk hair caddis, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other streams in the area.

Laguna Del Campo: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and worms.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, senkos, curly tail grubs, jerk baits, crank baits and topwater lures for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing for kokanee was good trolling Arnies, Panther Martins and Z Rays tipped with corn at 25 to 35 feet. Fishing for pike was slow with just a few caught by anglers using jerk baits and crank baits. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the upper 60s.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 357 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using small black and brown emergers, bead-head pheasant tails, black ants, Chernobyl ants and small olive and black streamers. Fishing through the bait waters was good using Chernobyl ants, copper John Barrs, pins minnows and night crawlers.

Santa Cruz Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Panther Martins, Z Rays, Fisher Chick bottle cap lures, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for trout. The best action was reported by anglers fishing from boats. We had no reports on other species.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout.

Tingley Beach: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was slow for all species but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using night crawlers and liver.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was sporadic at best this past week. A few white bass and an occasional walleye were caught by anglers trolling crank baits. Anglers fishing from the bank and using night crawlers picked up a few catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair using lizards, tubes, chatter baits, jerk baits and topwater lures for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Topwater worked best in the early morning and late evening hours. Fishing was fair to good using worms and small tubes for bluegill. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. The best catfish reports came from anglers fishing at night. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits for white bass. We had no reports on other species. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open. The surface temp was in the mid to upper 70s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair to good using night crawlers, hot dogs and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 57 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using worms. We had no reports on tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 1,620 cfs. Fishing was good using night crawlers, hot dogs, shrimp and liver for catfish. Anglers drifting night crawlers had the best luck. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 2.3 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was good using night crawlers, chicken liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bottomless Lakes: The main entrance to the park has reopened. We had no reports from anglers.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was slow to fair using worms, salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was fair using worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms, liver, hot dogs and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was slow with just a few trout and catfish caught by anglers using worms. The lake is very mossy around the edges to about 7 to 10 feet out from the bank.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow. There were a few catfish caught by anglers using night crawlers and homemade dough bait.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was good using stink bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 79 cfs. Fishing below Sumner Lake was slow.

Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 9.9 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, beef liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using topwater lures, tubes and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
