Portales is throwing a big outdoor party next week and Mayor Sharon King is hoping to pack the lawn area in front of Eastern New Mexico University’s administration building for the event.

Amarillo television station KFDA visits three towns in its viewing area each summer for live outdoor broadcasts. When Portales was selected (along with Dumas and Childress, Texas), local officials decided to also use the occasion to celebrate ENMU’s 80th birthday.

The News Channel 10 team will be set up north of the Roosevelt County Historical Museum by 5 p.m. on July 25, and the entire area between ENMU’s Admin-istration Building and U.S. 70 will be blocked off from parking and open to vendors, musicians, craft-makers, picnickers—anyone who would like to come out for the evening. There will be food, music, volleyball, carnival games, and a highly-anticipated tug-of-war involving local police officers and firefighters and the KFDA anchors.

The event is free—including birthday cake for the masses—but King would like potential vendors to contact her ahead of time so she can plan for a loosely-organized set up. You may email her at [email protected], or drop by City Hall.

“We need as many people as we can get to just come out and have fun,” King said.
