WIC benefits expanded

The state’s Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits have been expanded to include reimbursement for any authorized farmer roadside stand selling fresh, local produce, according to a press release from the governor’s office.

Gov. Susana Martinez made the announcement Wednes-day. The expansion was made to help more New Mexico children and families to eat healthier with locally grown produce.

“Our New Mexico farmers grow some of the highest-quality produce in the country,” said Martinez in the press release. “This expansion helps more of our kids and seniors have access to these fresh fruits and vegetables in communities throughout New Mexico, including areas where grocery markets aren’t always accessible. It’s a great opportunity for both families and farmers.”

WIC is the Special Supplemental Food Program for women, infants, and children, which helps more kids and families get the nutritious food they need to eat and live healthier, the press release said. The program also includes Senior Dollars, a supplemental food program for low-income seniors.
