Over many years, photographs have been donated to Eastern New Mexico University’s Golden Library’s special collections, but these photos have no names to the people in them.
The foyer of the library had open display cases that needed to be filled this summer and Catalog Librarian Debbie Lang had the idea of putting the photos on display and having people come in and identify the people in the photos.
Lang spent two days going through the large collection of unidentified pictures and chose a few random photos.
Gene Bundy, special collections librarian said that some of the photos are more than 100 years old.

The photos, though not identified, tell a story. There are two cowgirls on a horse going down a street. There are club meetings, but no way of knowing what club. There are many with families, events like May Pole, portraits of people and schools in Roosevelt County. There is even a photo of a girl’s junior high called El Theolte taken in 1914.
“We got this photos around the 1970s when we were doing an oral history and we asked people to donate photos. So we have these photos with no identification,” Bundy said.
Bundy said they just want to know who the people are in the photographs and hopefully people in the community can help.
The photographs are displayed with numbers beside them and in front of the photos are sheets where people can write the names of the individuals.
On Tuesday, a few photos had been given names, but many were still left blank.
“We hope we get all the photos identified,” Bundy said.
The exhibit will close Aug. 15 and Bundy is encouraging anyone to come and look at the photos.
Bundy said they have more photos that still need to be identified that are not displayed and they might hold another exhibit.
“We may do it again, if we get enough of these photos identified,” Bundy said.
The library is open for anyone to come identify the photos from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
