ROSWELL — Portales High’s girls held their own for a half on Friday, but Roswell High took control with three goals in the first nine minutes of the second half and pulled away to a 5-0 win on Friday in a tournament hosted by Roswell Goddard.
The Lady Rams face Lovington in a 9 a.m. consolation semifinal today, will play Ruidoso or Valencia for either seventh place at 1 p.m. or fifth place at 3 p.m. in the eight-team tourney.
“It was a learning game for us,” Lady Rams coach Sara Vasquez said. “We tried different formations to see what worked and didn’t work.”
Junior forward Lrissa Cobos put the Lady Coyotes (1-1) in front, converting a penalty kick in the 26th minute, and that score stood up through halftime.
Senior defender Jasmine Carmona made it 2-0 about two minutes into the second half, and Roswell High followed with two more goals — one by Cobos — in short order to put the game out of reach.
The Lady Coyotes outshot Portales 10-2 on goal. Sophomore Azsjuh Howell made five saves in her first varsity game in goal for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Coyotes meet Valencia in one championship semifinal, while the other pits Artesia against Goddard.
