Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Clovis has been on track most of the summer to do something that hasn’t happened in 10 years — finish the year with an above-average rainfall total.
As of 7 p.m. Tuesday, 12.44 inches of precipitation had been recorded at Cannon Air Force Base’s weather station, according to accuweather.com, which is 1/2 inch behind the historical year-to-date average.
Traditionally August is the wettest month of the year on average at 3.48 inches of rain, but only 1.66 inches has been recorded so far this month.
At the end of July, the precipitation count was about 3/4 of an inch above the year-to-date average. The annual average precipitation at Cannon is 19.13 inches.
Accuweather meteorologist Erik Pindrock said there was a “good potential” for showers and thunderstorms through today, but not much chance of rain the rest of the month.
The good news is the forecast for the next 30 days is for above normal precipitation, according to Pindrock. The average rain total for September is 2.18 inches average, which was easily surpassed in September 2013 when 6 inches rain drenched the area.
Pindrock said the 90-day forecast calls for slightly above average rainfall.
The last time the area received above-average rainfall was in 2004 (20.97 inches).
