Clovis sophomore Carl Michael battles for control of the ball against Roswell Goddard sophomore Jonathan Sanchez during the first half of Tuesday’s boys soccer match at Leon Williams Stadium. The Wildcats posted a 3-1 victory over the Rockets.

The Wildcats scored twice midway through the second half and held on for a 3-1 win over Roswell Goddard at Leon Williams Stadium.

Goddard (1-3) didn’t score until Jonathan Sanchez found the net with less than four minutes remaining, and for a time after that the Rockets applied some pressure in the Clovis zone.

But the Cats’ Luke Bussen added an insurance goal in a somewhat rare “extra time” minute, converting a long downfield pass from Juan Carrera by looping about a 20-yard shot over Rockets goalkeeper Miguel Robles and into the net.

CHS coach Greg Trujillo said he thought the Cats (5-2-1) should have gotten on the board earlier.

“In the first half we maintained possession, but this field is just so fast it’s hard to stay in control,” he said.

Kousei Richeson and Carrera each scored a goal about five minutes apart to give the Cats a 2-0 lead. Carrera and Richeson also each had an assist.

“We’re getting possessions and we’re getting quality shots,” Trujillo said. “It gets a little frustrating when we can’t put it in the net.

“We’re taking shots too far outside the (18-yard box). Against tougher teams, we’ve got to be able to eliminate mistakes, because that’s the difference between a win and a loss.”

Clovis junior Eduardo Hernandez tries to control the ball while Roswell Goddard senior Daniel Najera challenges during the first half of Tuesday’s boys soccer matchup at Leon Williams Stadium.

Trujillo said he thought the officials added the extra minute for “delay of game” consideration.

The Cats’ next outing will be on Thursday in a 5 p.m. start at Portales. Those teams played to a scoreless tie here last week.
