I have a problem, and it’s not
obsessing over Benedict Cumberbatch. All my favorite characters die. Spoilers for many shows, books and movies ahead.
It’s a trend I have noticed since I was young when I was watching “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” I watched the last movie that came out and Data, my favorite character ever, died. I was inconsolable. I’m still upset about it.
Then “Lost” came along and ruined my life. Charlie was my favorite character and guess what happened to him. He died and I know everyone is dead in that show, but I’m still upset.
Also in the books I have read, my favorite character dies. Fred from “Harry Potter” — I woke up my parents with my crying; Prim from “Mockingjay” — I threw my book across the room. I’m sure my favorite will die in the book I’m reading now.
“Sherlock” even killed off my favorite character for two years in a sense. It’s really complicated.
The Doctor has died 12 times and the worst was 10’s death, which I still cry about. Every season of “Supernatural,” someone I love dies. Kevin, I miss you, you adorable prophet.
Even a new series I just started to watch, “Hannibal,” killed off someone I loved. I was so hopeful. I even told myself, “She is so cool, they won’t kill her.” I was wrong. Dang you Hannibal Lector for being a serial cannibal murderer!
Do I have a curse that the character I love must die a horrific death?
I’m starting to think so because it hasn’t lifted. Do I just gravitate to killable characters?
Should I go to sitcoms where no main characters die? With my luck someone will die.
