Almost time to give pruning shears a rest

The last week of October marks the end of my yard working season. Roses are still glorious in October. Trees are splendid. Temperatures are perfect. My beautiful black cat and I take opportunity of every possible afternoon to work outside.

The season has been filled with the typical sympathetic comments from well wishers. They go something like this:

“Bless your heart, you just work so hard.”

And I reply with my standard, “Oh no. It’s not work. I love it.”

Some find bliss in curling up with a good book, or in baking cookies, or shopping. Fishing, hunting, or sewing may help them relax. As for me, give me the gardening gloves, a big container for the weeds, and a trusty steak knife for hacking at the roots, and the cares of the world begin to vanish.

I’ll miss it for a few months. I’ll move inside and work on some crafts. The crock pot will come out of the pantry for some seasonal soups. Good grief … I’ll be decorating the tree in a month.

Hang up the pruning shears for a little while, fellow landscapers. I’ll see you back out in the garden in two shakes of a lamb’s tail.
