Zias edge Mustangs, stay alive in LSC race

Staff report

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Junior midfielder Carolyn Armijo scored her first goal of the season and senior goalkeeper Fabienne Wilson notched her fourth shutout of the campaign on Sunday as Eastern New Mexico University posted a 1-0 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer victory over Midwestern State.

The victory leaves the Zias (8-6-0, 5-3-0 LSC) tied for second place in the LSC with Texas A&M-Commerce (10-5-0, 5-3-0), just behind Angelo State (12-3-1, 5-3-1). ENMU finishes the regular season at home with matches against Texas Woman’s (9-6-1, 3-4-1) at 2 p.m. on Friday and against Commerce at noon on Sunday.

MSU (8-4-5, 3-4-2) wraps up league play on Friday at home against Angelo.

Armijo’s goal came with just over 13 minutes left in the contest, off a rebound of a shot by freshman midfielder Morgan Fairbanks.

The Mustangs had a 7-5 edge in shots on goal and a 10-1 margin in corner kicks, including 10-0 in the second have, but Wilson managed to earn her sixth career shutout and fourth this season.

The Zias earned their fourth win all-time over the Mustangs and second at Wichita Falls. They are also two wins away from the school’s win record set in 2005 and one away from tying for the second-most wins, a feat accomplished five times and most recently in 2009.
