New Mexico Gov. R.C. Dillon was rooting for a fellow Republican to succeed him in the November 1930 election. He quipped the executive mansion would need some renovations; the bathtub would need to accommodate candidate C.M. Botts, who was 6-feet tall, he said. In response, Democratic governor candidate Arthur Seligman replied: “I want to advise Gov. Dillon that there is no need for a 6-foot bathtub. A small one will do because all of the mud that has been thrown at me by the Republicans has slid off.” Seligman won the election.
