Volleyball district playoffs are set to begin next week as area teams wrap up their regular seasons.

The Elida Tigers (18-0, 8-0 in district) are working on an undefeated season and a fifth straight District 4-1A title, but the ultimate goal is a fifth straight state title. “We definitely want that title. Not only do our fans expect it, but we expect it from ourselves. Everything we do this season is for that title. Every score, every game is a step towards it,” senior blocker Kenzee Criswell said after Elida beat Floyd earlier this month.

Elida has won 12 of their 18 games in three sets and only played a fifth set twice, both against Fort Sumner, The Tigers defeated House in three games Tuesday and will wrap up their season against Floyd on Thursday.

The Floyd Broncos (5-11, 3-5) are in fourth in District 4-1A but with two games left in their schedule they have a chance to finish at .500 in district play. They played San Jon on Tuesday night and face Elida on Thursday.

The Portales Lady Rams (8-11, 2-1) are in second place in District 4-4A and will play their last game of the regular season against the Ruidoso Warriors on Thursday.

The Warriors defeated Portales earlier this month in four games, winning the last two games with after the score was tied 1-1.

“This team doesn’t have a lot of experience, so we have to keep a positive attitude and know things will turn around for us,” Lady Rams coach Ruth Chavez said after the loss.

A win at Ruidoso would force a playoff for the regular-season district title — which comes with an automatic berth in next month’s state playoffs — and top seed in next week’s district tournament. The state tournament, which takes 12 teams each in Class 1A through 6A, is Nov. 13-15 in Rio Rancho.
