CANYON, Texas — Brianna Sotello and Alexa Johnson posted double-doubles and third-seeded Angelo State turned back No. 6 Eastern New Mexico University 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20 in the quarterfinal round of the Lone Star Conference volleyball tournament on Thursday.
Sotello combined 11 kills and 11 digs while Johnson had 10 digs and 53 assists for the Rambelles (20-7). ASU takes on seventh-seeded Cameron, which upended No. 2 Texas Woman’s in five sets, in the semifinals at 4 p.m. (MDT) today.
Senior middle blocker Agatha Gibbons had 14 kills and nine block assists for the Zias (13-18), while senior outside hitter Lindsey Barron added 12 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Lawson posted a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs.
ENMU managed to take s set from the Rambelles for the first time since 2009, and the first set the Zias have won in the conference tournament since 2004.
The Rambelles (20-7) erased a quick 2-0 Zias lead with an 8-3 run in the first set, then took control with a 5-1 run shortly thereafter.
ENMU used three Rambelles attack errors to jump out to an 8-1 advantage in the second set. The Rambelles rallied for a 15-14 lead, but the Zias won four of the next frive points capped by a combined block from Gibbons and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Frye.
ASU cut the margin to a single point several times before Barron finished it off with a kill on set point.
Angelo used a 4-0 run to take the lead for good 16-13 in a seesaw third set. Gibbons’ kill pulled ENMU to 17-16 before the Rambelles pulled away.
The Zias led 2-1 early in the fourth set, but the Rambelles gained control with a 9-3 surge. The Zias got within 19-18 after back-to-back kills by Gibbons, but after a timeout the Rambelles closed out the match with five of the final six points.
