Steers set for second round

By virtue of winning their district title, the Farwell Steers were able to take advantage of a first-round bye in the Texas Class 2A Division II playoffs.

Now they’re ready to get at it again, with a 7:30 p.m. (CST) area round game tonight against Memphis at Plainview.

“We were able to get a couple of kids rest that needed it,” first-year Steers coach Danny Brittain said. “We were banged up a little bit, but not anything devastating.”

Adrian Aleman, shown on a carry against Texico in September, has led Farwell with 1,456 yards on 225 carries and 12 touchdowns. The Steers, who had a bye last week, open their Class 2A Division II playoff run tonight against Memphis at Plainview.

Also tonight, Muleshoe (8-3) will try to extend its winning streak to eight when the Mules face Breckenridge (6-5) in a 7 p.m. (CST) Class 3A Division I kickoff at Snyder.

With the Steers (8-2) idle, Brittain scouted Memphis’ 26-12 win over Smyer last Friday in the bi-district round.

“They’re not as big as we are, but they’ve got some quickness,” he said of the Cyclones (5-6). “They spread it out a little bit, but not a whole lot.”

He said Memphis normally lines up in a wing-T formation and relies heavily on running backs Kade Byars and Michael Alexander. The Cyclones use the pass more as a surprise element.

“They’re pretty predictable,” Brittain said. “They don’t run a while lot of plays, but they’ll lull you to sleep.”

Muleshoe last met Breckenridge in a 2010 Class 2A Division I area round game at Abilene, blanking the Buckaroos 14-0 with a pair of second -quarter touchdowns. Mules coach David Wood said his team has its work cut out.

“They’re the best team we’ve played so far, with the probable exception of Sweetwater,” he said. “They’re the biggest team we’ve faced except for (district foe Amarillo) River Road, but River Road doesn’t have the kind of athletes they have.”

While Muleshoe struggled early before pulling away from Kermit 31-7 last week, Breckenridge advanced with a 23-16 win over Clyde.

Senior running back-middle linebacker Austin Dooley is the Buckaroos’ top player.

“If we can stop (Dooley), we’ll win the game,” Wood said. “But that’s easier said than done.”

The Mules lost junior quarterback Danny Campos to injury during the first half of a game at Childress on Oct. 24, but senior Keagan Gonzales has filled in nicely.

“He’s given us a completely different look,” Wood said. “He’s more of a running quarterback, and Danny is more of a passing quarterback.”

With wins tonight, the Steers and Mules will play again on Friday next week.

Farwell would face the winner of a game between Seagraves (10-0) and Gruver (9-2), while Muleshoe would take on either Shallowater (10-1) or Boyd (5-6).
