UTPB notches 67-58 triumph over ENMU

ENMU junior post Jasmine Johnson scored 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting on Friday, but the Zias came up short in a 67-58 loss to Texas-Permian Basin in the Lubbock Christian Thanksgiving Classic.

LUBBOCK — Texas-Permian Basin used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to take control, then hit nine consecutive free throws in the final two minutes on Friday to seal a 67-58 women’s basketball victory over Eastern New Mexico University in Lubbock Christian’s Thanksgiving Classic.

Senior guard Giselle Loya had four 3-pointers and scored 19 points for the Falcons (4-0), who are coming off a seven-win season and were picked for eighth place this year in the Heartland Conference. Senior guard-forward Valerie Barriga added 12 points despite 2-of-11 shooting from the field.

Junior guard Sarah Stinnett scored a season-best 16 points for the Zias (1-4) on 8-of-13 shooting, while senior post Jasmine Johnson went 6-of-9 from the floor and finished with 12 points. But the rest of the team combined to go 12-of-37 from the field, and ENMU overall went 1-for-14 from 3-point range.

ENMU will face host LCU in the finale of the two-day event at 6:30 p.m. (MST) today.

The Zias led by four points twice in the first five minutes, but 3-pointers by Barriga and Loya pushed UTPB in front for good 13-10 with 13:55 left in the half.

The Falcons’ lead was one when they went on their 10-0 surge, opening a 24-13 margin with eight minutes left in the half.

It reached 16 points early in the second stanza before ENMU took off on a 20-8 run to get within 48-44 with just over nine minutes remaining. The Falcons regained a 10-point lead before the Zias closed to 58-54 on a driving layup by junior guard Cassidy Doherty with 2:06 to go, capping a 6-0 run.

Barriga then missed a free throw with 1:58 left, but made the second and added two more charity tosses at the 1:15 mark

for a seven-point lead. Keyondra White, Brianna Jones and Loya each hit two free throws in the final minute for the Falcons.

ENMU finished with four more field goals than UTPB, but went 5-for-8 from the line while the Falcons were 15-of-18.
