Parade entries needed

Staff report

Portales residents are in for a holiday treat Friday evening as the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce hosts the 28th annual Portales Christmas Jubilee.

The event includes the Christmas Jubilee Lighted Parade, which will illuminate the streets of Portales from the Portales Recreation Center to the courthouse.

The little miss merry christmas royal court will be featured on the Chamber float as the parade makes its way through town.

Chamber director Karl Terry said this year is the second year that the chamber will be giving out awards for floats.

Floats will be judged on creativity, lighting and design. Terry said floats will be divided into three categories: Business, church, and non-profit.

Terry said last year’s parade featured about 40 entrees and hopes to include more in this year’s parade.

“We have had everything from very elaborate floats to motorcycle riders with blinking lights on their hats,” Terry said of previous parade entries.

Terry said sign-ups for the light parade are free and open to anyone who wants to participate. Entry forms can be picked up at the Chamber offices downtown.

The parade will culminate in the Christmas Jubilee event downtown at the courthouse.

Choirs from area schools will sing Christmas carols and food vendors will be on site, according to Terry. He said non-profit groups will also be on the square serving hot chocolate.

“The jubilee is a special time of year for the community. You get to see your neighbors and kids in the parade and it has a home town feeling,” Terry said.
