Letter to the Editor: Memory of coach lives with players

Regarding Wednesday’s death of former Eastern New Mexico University football coach Jack Scott:

Coach Scott’s first college coaching experience was at Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa, when I was a junior.

He immediately changed the way we had done things. He instilled a spirit and attitude that playing football for him was important.

Most of us never knew what it was like to work that hard and do the conditioning at 100 percent for every drill. Coach Scott made the games seem like a reward for the work we did every day at practice.

Coach Scott inspired me and many of my teammates to be high school coaches. We wanted to be successful and we wanted to send our players to play for him. We wanted them to experience football the Jack Scott way.

He took an interest in his players’ college experience. By taking such a personal interest in each player he helped them to develop confidence.

Coach Scott was always promoting Westmar football, sharing his philosophy that hard work and dedication would bring success. Fall Saturdays in LeMars were like Saturdays on the gridirons of the Big Ten.

The memory of Coach Scott will live forever in the hearts of the boys he coached and inspired.
