Borger (1-3) vs. Clovis (0-1)
5 p.m. today, Greyhound Arena
Last time out: The Wildcats are coming off a 71-56 loss last Saturday at Rio Rancho, while the Bulldogs lost Tuesday at home against Panhandle 59-45.
Last meeting: 2007, Clovis beat the Bulldogs 73-57.
Fast facts: The game is the third of four at Greyhound Arena on Saturday, as part of the ENMU Tipoff, Texico plays Native American Community Academy in the second game at 3 p.m., while Portales takes on St. Michael’s in the 7 p.m. finale.
Wildcats update: First-year coach Scott Robinson said the opening game and the last week were typical of early December, in that many of the Wildcats are still in football shape and much of the team has battled through sickness going around the school. “We haven’t had a practice yet with everybody intact,” Robinson said. “We’re working on conditioning as much as anything. We’ve got to get into shape, trying to establish some offensive rhythm.”
About the Bulldogs: “They’re athletic,” Robinson said. “They’ll play half-court man, predominantly. They want to try to get to the basket on offense. They want to stretch you out, and they’ve got a couple of good players in the post.”
Injury update: The Wildcats will be without senior guard Kaine Bender this season. Bender, who played the second half of the football season after rehabbing from an ACL injury, will have surgery Dec. 16. The six-month recovery period is expected to end his athletic career at Clovis High School. Sophomore guard Micah Gray has been cleared for practice on Monday. Robinson said Gray won’t see action Tuesday against Tascosa, but could play in the weekend tournament at Albuerque Academy. The original assumption was that Gray (collarbone) would miss the first three weeks of the season.
