N.M. Fishing Report — Dec. 11

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Closed for the season. Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 4.3 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Clayton Lake: Closed for the season. Conchas Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week. Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Eagle Nest Lake: There is a thin layer of ice on the lake at this time and no fishing permitted. Contact the State Park office at (575) 377-1594 for updated conditions. Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week. Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Maloya: Fishing was fair to good using orange, chartreuse and rainbow Power Bait and Gulp eggs for trout. We had no reports on perch. Fishing pressure was extremely light. Los Pinos: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, copper John Barrs and bead-head prince nymphs for trout. Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Maxwell Lake 13: Closed for the season. Monastery Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. Morphy Lake: Closed for the season. Mt View Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 31 cfs. Trout fishing in the Villanueva area was fair to good using salmon eggs for trout. Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 38 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using poundmeisters, copper John Barrs and salmon eggs. Rio Costilla: We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 602 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 10 cfs. Trout fishing was slow. Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 9.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week. Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week. Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Storrie Lake: Fishing was fair using salmon peach Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species. Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Ute Lake: Fishing was very good using slab spoons and blade baits for white bass. Some were found at 24 feet while others were considerably deeper. Fishing for walleye was good using jigs tipped with minnows, slab spoons and blade baits at 40 to 45 feet of water. A few catfish were caught by anglers using stink bait. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 40s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was extremely light. Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 164 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain was good using worms, salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout. Fishing on the Peralta Drain was good using salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species or from the other drains. Bluewater Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using large streamers and jerk baits for tiger musky. We had no reports on other species. There was a thin layer of ice along the shoreline in the early morning hours but it cleared up during the day. For updated ice conditions contact the State Park office at (505) 876-2391. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake. Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week. Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week. Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 219 cfs and 224 cfs respectively. Trout fishing below El Vado was fair to good using salmon eggs, wooly buggers and copper John Barrs. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair using worms, wooly buggers and salmon eggs. Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light. El VadoLake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Fenton Lake: A layer of ice has formed on the lake and it is closed to ice fishing. Put this one back on your list for great fishing early next spring. Heron Lake: Kokanee snagging was described as sporadic this past week with just a few limits taken. Fishing for rainbow trout was fair for anglers using Power Bait and roe sacs. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was very light. Jackson Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs and small spoons. We had no reports on other species. Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River as of Monday was 33 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez River was fair to good using copper John Barrs and salmon eggs. We had no reports from the other streams in the area. Laguna Del Campo: Closed for the season. Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week. Navajo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers. San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 361 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was very good using foam wing emergers, jujubee midges, zebra midges, Griffith’s gnats, egg patterns and small bead-head pheasant tails. Fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using salmon eggs, Power Bait, egg patterns, copper John Barrs and wooly buggers. Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week. Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was very good using marshmallows, Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. A few trout were also caught by anglers using small Kastmasters. Trout fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was fair using zebra midges and small streamers. Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond: Carl Lukesh from Las Cruces fished here Sunday and reported catching a limit of trout within 30 minutes. He was using a Pistol Pete. Bear Canyon: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, Velveeta cheese and Power Bait. Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light. Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair using slab spoons and blade baits for white bass. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow. We had no reports on other species. Escondida Lake: Fishing was very good using orange, chartreuse and red garlic scented Power Bait, small Daredevles and Kastmasters for trout. We had no reports on other species. Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 83 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using Power Bait for trout. Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week. Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week. Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 3.7 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Snow Lake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs for trout.

Young Pond: Fishing continued to be very good this past week as anglers caught limits of rainbow trout. They were using red, green, chartreuse and yellow Power Bait and Velveeta cheese. We had no reports on other species.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and small spoons for trout. We had no reports on other species. Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 101 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs for trout. Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species. Bonito Lake: Closed. Bosque Redondo: Fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. Bottomless Lakes: Fishing at Pasture Lake and Devil’s Inkwell was good using chartreuse and rainbow Power Bait for trout. Brantley Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Fishing was fair using chartreuse and green Power Bait for trout. Chaparral Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. El Rito Creek: Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and garlic Power Bait for trout. Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was fair using salmon peach and chartreuse Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was good for anglers using Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes. Jal Lake: Fishing was fair using worms, Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. Lake Van: A recent golden algae bloom has resulted in a fish kill and stocking has been temporarily halted. Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was good using marshmallows and Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner on Monday was 20 cfs. Fishing below Sumner was fair to good using Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species. Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 13 cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light. Sumner Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
