Staff report

Many local organizations need donations to help fund holiday programs for families in need this year, including the United Way of Eastern New Mexico.

The UWENM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that assists agencies that provide families in Curry and Roosevelt counties with food, heat and other emergency help.

Erinn Burch, UWENM executive director, says the organization focuses on education, income and health.

One of the programs at the UWENM is Winter Warmth, which supplies heaters to families referred by local social workers and case managers.

According to the organization’s annual report, last year it gave 80 heaters to families in Curry and Roosevelt counties.

The UWENM also has a Women’s Initiative Network (WIN), more than 50 members that support projects in the community.

According to the report, the UWENM has programs that provide prescription help, a Zenith Youth Leadership Academy and a 2-1-1 hotline that connects people to agencies for help.

The UWENM also assists 35 local agencies and programs like the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico mobile food pantry program, Clovis and Portales Meals on Wheels, The

Hartley House safe house and Eastern New Mexico Christian Children’s home.

The UWENM has three full-time employees and is supported by donations through local employer partnerships and online through their web site:

According to the web site, every year UWENM funding decisions are made by 40 to 50 community volunteers who recommend funding levels for the local agencies.

The United Way of Eastern New Mexico is located at the Matt 25 Hope Center in Clovis.

Dec. 31 is the deadline to claim a deduction for this year’s charitable donations.
